Organic farming and indigenous olives
At Biocalaceite we are completely committed to the environment and your health, so we only grow ecological and organic crops.
Thanks to the fact that we have been working the same fields for centuries, we have learned how to control pests and adapt to drought periods. Trees have access to groundwater that accumulates in the subsoil during the rainy season.
During times of extreme drought, what happens sometimes is that the trees drop their olives to the ground when they are beginning to grow, so they do not produce anything, but the tree survives. In this way, in addition to surviving, the trees rest and prepare for the following year, when the weather will bring forth excellent olives.
Because it is not artificially irrigated, the tree is not stressed, that is to say, it is like when you are thirsty and you drink only the water that you need to quench your thirst, and nobody is forcing you to drink more.
If you continued drinking without being thirsty, you would swell up and weigh more (at harvest there would be be greater production) but you would not feel better (although you up the kilos, you add nothing to the flavour or vitamins and other nutrients) so in the end you get less goodness per kilo of olive. At Biocalaceite we always put quality above quantity.
We do not artificially water the trees, we let them follow their own natural cycles and in this way, together with the characteristics of Calaceite soil we get olives and olive oil that are organic, pure and 100% natural.
The variety of our olive trees is Empeltre. This variety was introduced to our region by the Greeks and Phoenicians more than 2,500 years ago and, because it is perfectly adapted to the climate of the region, we still continue, year after year, cultivating this special variety.
